FCT Elections: APC wins five councils, PDP retains one

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dominated the 2026 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory, winning five out of the six chairmanship seats contested on Saturday.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured the remaining seat in Gwagwalada, preventing a total sweep by the ruling party.
Results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday showed that the APC won Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje, while the PDP emerged victorious in Gwagwalada.
In Gwagwalada, PDP candidate Mohammed Kasim polled 22,165 votes to defeat APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who secured 17,788 votes. Announcing the result, Returning Officer Philip Akpen said:
“That Mohammed Kasim of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”
Breakdown of Gwagwalada results:

In Bwari, APC’s Joshua Ishaku won with 18,466 votes. Returning Officer Mohammed Nurudeen declared:
“That Joshua Ishaku, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”

* ZLP – 3,515
At AMAC, Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was re-elected after polling 40,295 votes.

In Abaji, Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the APC secured victory with 15,536 votes against PDP’s 4,547 votes.

In Kwali, APC’s Nuhu Daniel polled 17,032 votes to defeat PDP’s Haruna Pai, who scored 8,575 votes.

In Kuje, APC candidate Danjuma Shekwolo won with 17,269 votes.

With five councils secured, the APC has strengthened its grip on grassroots leadership in the FCT, while the PDP holds on to Gwagwalada.
