FCT council poll: “I will back only candidates that support Tinubu” – Wike declares

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will support only candidates who are aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s vision ahead of the FCT area councils’ election.

Wike made this statement on Saturday night, February 14, 2026, during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor in Abuja, a gathering honouring six decades of leadership, service, and impact.

“We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on February 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate who supports President Tinubu to win.

It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology for my stand,” Wike said.

The minister emphasised that his backing isn’t limited by political party affiliation — his focus, he said, is strictly on candidates who align with the president’s agenda and policies for the FCT.

Wike’s stance comes as the councillorship and chairmanship elections across the six area councils of the FCT draw near, with voting scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.

Several major parties are contesting, and voters are preparing to decide on local leadership that will oversee community services and development.

As the FCT Area Council election approaches, Wike’s declaration is likely to intensify discussions about political influence, loyalty, and the role of federal officials in local elections.
