Ex-Bafana captain questions Uche Ikpeazu’s decision to choose Uganda over Nigeria

Former Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo has admitted his surprise at Uche Ikpeazu’s decision to commit his international future to Uganda rather than continue pushing for a place in Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Eligibility and international switch

London-born Ikpeazu was eligible to represent Nigeria, England and Uganda before making a cap-tying appearance for the Cranes during a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Mozambique in September 2025.

His decision effectively closed the door on a potential Super Eagles career.

Nigeria interest that never materialised

Ikpeazu had long been on the radar of the Nigeria Football Federation. Former Dream Team VI coach Samson Siasia invited him to a Nigeria U23 training camp in December 2014, fuelling expectations of a future senior call-up.

Nigeria were understood to be his preferred option, but despite sustained interest, a senior opportunity never came.

Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo, who played with Ikpeazu at Watford, also encouraged him to commit to Nigeria.

However, with time no longer on his side, the St Johnstone forward opted to accept Uganda’s approach.

Khumalo expresses surprise

Khumalo, who played alongside Ikpeazu at Doncaster Rovers, admitted he did not expect the striker to choose Uganda.

“I actually was with him at Doncaster Rovers when he was a youngster and I remember speaking to him, Nigerian and Uganda parents,” Khumalo said on SuperSport. “So I’m quite surprised that he obviously turned out for Uganda because I thought he would have definitely pushed for Nigeria.”

Focus shifts to AFCON showdown

Ikpeazu now turns his attention to a high-profile reunion with Nigeria when Uganda face the Super Eagles in their final group match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 30-year-old has already made his mark at the tournament, scoring within four minutes on his AFCON debut as Uganda came from behind to draw 1-1 with Tanzania.

All eyes will be on the striker as he comes up against the nation he once hoped to represent.
