“Even if I earn ₦600k…” – Woman sparks debate, insists men must take their roles despite earning less

A Nigerian woman has sparked heated conversations online after boldly sharing her views on who should pay children’s school fees in a marriage where the wife earns more.
In a viral clip making the rounds on social media, the woman revealed that even if she earns ₦600,000 monthly while her husband earns ₦200,000, she wouldn’t still fully support the household financially.
However, she insisted that the responsibility of paying the children’s school fees should remain the man’s duty.
In her words, she said:
“I’m a salary earner and I am your wife. I am earning ₦600,000 in a month, and you as a man, you are earning ₦200,000. Please, who should pay the children’s school fees? Because I don’t understand.”
She clarified that while she is willing to assist financially, she believes the primary responsibility still lies with the husband as the head of the home.
The statement has divided social media users, sparking intense debate.
Reacting, one user wrote, “Marriage is teamwork. Whoever earns more should carry more responsibility.”
Another disagreed, saying, “Leadership isn’t about money. A man should always take responsibility, no matter the income gap.”
As conversations around gender roles and modern marriage continue, her comments have reignited a familiar question many couples struggle with: Is leadership in marriage defined by income, or by responsibility?
