EPL: Wirtz opens Liverpool account in Wolves win at Anfield

Florian Wirtz marked his first goal for Liverpool as Arne Slot’s side secured a 2-1 Premier League victory over Wolves on an emotional afternoon at Anfield, extending their winning run while the visitors remained without a league win this season.
Liverpool struck twice in quick succession late in the first half, with Ryan Gravenberch breaking the deadlock before Wirtz doubled the advantage a minute later.
Wolves reduced the deficit after the break through Santiago Bueno, but the hosts managed the closing stages effectively to claim a third straight league win and extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches.

Tribute-filled atmosphere at Anfield
The fixture was played in a reflective setting as both clubs paid tribute to Diogo Jota, who represented Liverpool and Wolves during his career.
Jota’s sons, Dinis and Duarte, served as mascots, while supporters from both sides joined in song in the 20th minute.
Liverpool have retired the No. 20 shirt in his honour following his death in a car accident in July.
Late first-half burst decides contest
After a balanced opening period, Liverpool made their pressure count in the 41st minute when Gravenberch finished from Jeremie Frimpong’s delivery.
Moments later, Wirtz capitalised on Hugo Ekitike’s cross to score his first goal for the club and give the hosts firm control at the interval.
Wolves rally but Liverpool hold firm
Wolves responded early in the second half as Bueno followed up after Alisson Becker saved Tolu Arokodare’s header from a corner.
Despite renewed pressure and substitutions aimed at forcing an equaliser, the visitors were unable to break through again.
Momentum maintained for Slot’s side
Liverpool saw out the contest with composure, maintaining pressure under Slot.
Wolves’ struggles, however, continued as they remained winless in the Premier League this season.
