EPL: Liverpool line up Iraola as new manager after Slot exit

Liverpool are moving quickly to appoint Andoni Iraola as their next manager following the departure of Arne Slot, with the Spanish coach now emerging as the clear frontrunner for the role.

The club hierarchy has opted for a change in direction after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, which saw Liverpool fall short of expectations despite securing Champions League qualification on the final day of the season.

Slot leaves Anfield immediately after just one full season in charge, a spell that included moments of promise but ultimately failed to deliver sustained consistency or a serious title challenge.

Iraola identified as leading candidate

Liverpool have already identified Iraola as their preferred successor, with negotiations expected to accelerate in the coming days as the club looks to finalise a swift managerial transition.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that the decision has effectively been made, stating on X: “Andoni Iraola, set to become the next Liverpool manager as revealed earlier today! The negotiations will move forward quickly to get it done with formal steps but Liverpool decision made. Iraola will be the next manager.”

The 42-year-old Spaniard has earned strong admiration for his tactical approach, particularly his high-intensity pressing system and ability to maximise squad performance levels.

Why Liverpool turned to Iraola

Liverpool’s decision follows a season in which they finished 25 points behind Arsenal in the Premier League table, highlighting a widening gap at the top end of English football.

While Slot did deliver the title in his first campaign, the subsequent drop-off in performance and inability to maintain momentum prompted internal reassessment at Anfield.

Iraola’s reputation for structure, energy, and adaptability has positioned him as a strong fit for Liverpool’s long-term footballing model, particularly as the club looks to rebuild competitiveness at the highest level.
