EPL: Harry Maguire faces extended ban after English FA charge

Harry Maguire is facing the possibility of an extended suspension after being formally charged by the The Football Association (FA) over his conduct following a red card in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with AFC Bournemouth.
The England international was sent off in the 78th minute by referee Stuart Attwell for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity after pulling back striker Evanilson. However, it was his reaction after the decision that has triggered further disciplinary action.
FA charge complicates situation
In a statement, the FA confirmed that Maguire has been charged for allegedly using “improper and/or abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour” towards the fourth official.
The defender has been given until April 2 to respond. While a straight red card typically results in a one-match ban, this additional charge could lead to a longer suspension if proven.

The development presents a setback for United, who are in a critical phase of the season and already managing squad availability concerns.
Key fixtures under threat
Maguire is already ruled out of the upcoming league fixture against Leeds United on April 13 due to the automatic suspension.
However, further sanctions could see him miss additional high-profile games, including a crucial clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The timing is far from ideal for manager Michael Carrick, whose side are pushing to secure a top-four finish. Defensive stability remains a concern, with United conceding 42 goals in 31 league matches.
Notably, this was Maguire’s first red card since joining Manchester United, with his last dismissal dating back to his time at Leicester City in 2019, coincidentally also against Bournemouth.
With disciplinary proceedings now underway, the final decision could have a direct impact on United’s run-in and their ambitions for Champions League qualification.
