EPL: De Zerbi handed Spurs survival mandate

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as head coach on a five-year contract, despite immediate relegation concerns.
The decision comes after the departure of Igor Tudor, whose short tenure failed to stabilise results. Tottenham remain just above the relegation zone with seven matches left this season.
De Zerbi’s appointment suggests the club are prioritising a defined football identity, even as they battle to retain their Premier League status.
Style over short-term pragmatism
The Italian is widely recognised for his possession-based, attacking philosophy, built on structured build-up play and tactical flexibility. However, his approach has also drawn criticism for being rigid and difficult to adapt mid-season.

At Olympique de Marseille, De Zerbi delivered early success, including Champions League qualification and a competitive league campaign. Yet his second season exposed challenges, with inconsistent performances and reported dressing room tensions.
Frequent tactical adjustments and selection changes created instability, while heavy defeats, including a 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, raised questions about his in-game management.
Despite those issues, he left with a strong win percentage, reflecting his ability to produce results over time.
High-stakes implementation phase
Tottenham’s current situation presents a contrasting environment. Unlike previous roles where De Zerbi had time to implement his ideas, he now faces immediate performance pressure.
The squad has struggled with defensive organisation and consistency, factors that could be further tested by a system that demands technical precision and positional discipline.
Crucially, De Zerbi has accepted the role without a relegation clause, indicating alignment with the club’s long-term vision regardless of short-term outcomes.
The remaining fixtures will serve as a critical evaluation period. If results improve, Tottenham could secure both survival and a clear tactical direction.
If not, the club risks compounding an already difficult season while transitioning into a new strategic cycle.
