EPL: Burnley hold Man United as Fletcher drops points on debut

Darren Fletcher’s interim spell as Manchester United manager began with familiar frustration as his side were held to a 2-2 draw by relegation-threatened Burnley.

United fell behind early in the second half through a freak own goal by Ayden Heaven, underlining the defensive fragility that has plagued the club in recent weeks.

United respond but fail to take control

The response was immediate, as Benjamin Šeško restored parity with a composed finish to bring United back into the contest.

Momentum briefly swung in United’s favour on the hour mark when the Slovenian struck again, giving Fletcher’s side the lead and appearing to put them on course for a much-needed victory.

Game management issues resurface

That advantage proved short-lived. Burnley hit back soon after through a superb long-range effort from Jaidon Anthony, punishing United’s inability to manage the game and control key moments.

Despite late pressure, United failed to find a winner and settled for another costly draw.

The result extends a worrying trend of dropped points against struggling opposition and suggests continuity rather than change from the latter stages of Ruben Amorim’s tenure, leaving Fletcher with immediate questions to answer as the season continues to drift.
