EPL: Bruno Fernandes declines comments on Martinez red card, pundits weigh in

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes refused to be drawn into controversy following Lisandro Martinez’s red card, as reaction continues over the incident in their defeat to Leeds United.
Martinez was dismissed for pulling the hair of Dominic Calvert-Lewin after a VAR review, a decision that has divided opinion across the game.
Fernandes avoids disciplinary risk
Fernandes opted for caution when asked about the officiating, declining to comment directly.
The United skipper insisted not to comment, so as to avoid getting sanctioned for criticising a referee.

Calvert-Lewin, however, backed the decision, stating: “I felt my hair get pulled, told the ref, he makes the decisions. Unfortunate for [Martinez], whether he’s meant it or not. I hold no grudges.”
Mixed reactions from touchline and studio
Daniel Farke, Leeds boss admitted the incident could have changed the game but accepted the outcome after Leeds secured victory.
“I would have preferred to play 11 v 11 but it is how it is. But in the end we won the game and I don’t complain,” he said.
Pundits offered contrasting interpretations of the decision. Former United midfielder Roy Keane acknowledged the strict application of the rules but described the outcome as harsh.
“It is harsh but when looking at the laws you have to accept it,” Keane said.
Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was more critical, calling the decision “soft” and arguing it did not meet the threshold for a red card.
Meanwhile, Gary Neville suggested Martinez was aware of his actions, noting: “He’s pulled his hair and that results in a red card, nowadays.”
Defensive concerns deepen
The suspension compounds selection issues for Michael Carrick, with Martinez now ruled out of upcoming fixtures.
United could be left short at the back, particularly with Harry Maguire also facing a potential extended ban.
