Egypt edge Nigeria 2-1 in tense AFCON warm-up friendly

The Pharaohs of Egypt secured a narrow 2-1 win over the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a fiercely contested international friendly on Tuesday.
The game cones just days before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 tournament.
Played at the iconic Cairo International Stadium, the match served as the final preparatory game for both African giants ahead of the continental showpiece in Morocco.

First half action
Egypt started strong, dominating possession and creating early opportunities.
Their persistence paid off in the 28th minute when forward Mahmoud Saber capitalized on a precise cross from Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” to tap the ball past Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Nigeria found their foot as the half progressed and leveled the score in dramatic fashion during first-half stoppage time.
A free kick by Zaidu Sanusi struck the crossbar, and defender Chidozie Awaziem was the quickest to react, heading home the rebound in the 45+2 minute.
Second half and decisive goal
The second half began with both teams pushing for the lead. It was Egypt who found the decisive breakthrough in the 53rd minute.
Striker Mostafa Mohamed timed his run perfectly to beat the Nigerian offside trap and fired a powerful shot into the back of the net, restoring the Pharaohs’ lead.
Despite several substitutions and late pressure from Nigeria’s attack, including striker Paul Onuachu, Egypt’s defense held firm to see out the match and secure a morale-boosting victory.
Road to AFCON 2025
The result provides a significant confidence boost for Egypt, who are expected to be among the favorites in Morocco.
For Nigeria, the defeat highlights defensive vulnerabilities that coach Eric Chelle will need to address quickly before their tournament opener against Tanzania.
The Super Eagles are set to depart for their base in Fès, Morocco, to fine-tune preparations for their first group stage match on December 23.
