According to the mission, the project promotes access to US higher education while furthering “American leadership, commercial diplomacy, and the shared economic interests of the United States and Nigeria.”

It also noted that the 2026 cohort coincides with the Freedom 250 anniversary, which commemorates 250 years of American leadership, innovation, and democratic values.

“Freedom 250 marks 250 years of American leadership, innovation, and democratic values, and the OFP 2026 cohort will advance these priorities by preparing globally competitive talents aligned with U.S. economic and strategic interests,” the statement states.

The mission stated that the initiative reinforces US aims for “secure, lawful, and well-managed student participation” in American higher education institutions.

It said that high-performing students studying fields aligned with US strategic interests will be prioritized.

The program also covers necessary upfront application costs, such as standardized testing fees, application fees, and other associated charges.

It further stated that qualifying applicants must demonstrate academic distinction, leadership potential, a desire to pursue postsecondary education in the United States, remarkable accomplishments, research capability, and a commitment to visa compliance and responsible participation in US exchange programs.

The mission stated that participants would be expected to maintain high ethical standards throughout the curriculum.

It stated that applicants must submit a full application form, academic records, a personal statement, evidence of achievements, leadership, and research capability, as well as other supporting papers, by the deadline.
