Drama at NASS gate as security agents tear-gassed senator Natasha’s supporters (pictures)

There was drama on Tuesday in Abuja after supporters of embattled lawmaker representing Kogi Central, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, were dispersed with tear gas at the gate of the National Assembly.

It was gathered that the unfortunate development is coming shortly after the expiration of Senator Natasha’s six-month suspension from the Senate, raising hopes among her constituents that she would resume legislative duties without hindrance.

The female lawmaker arrived at the complex with a large crowd of supporters, and many were denied access beyond certain points.

In the process, security agents used tear gas to control the gathering. Several people were said to have sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Senator Natasha Condemns Action

Reacting to the development, while addressing newsmen, Akpoti-Uduaghan condemned the treatment of her supporters, insisting that their peaceful presence should have been respected.

She said: “These are innocent Nigerians who came in peace; they deserve better,” she told journalists.

Senate Suspension

Senator Natacha had remained locked out of office for six months, following her suspension over the alleged violation of the Senate’s standing rules.

Her suspension had sparked widespread reactions.

While critics, particularly civil society organisations and opposition politicians, condemned the Senate’s action, the upper chamber defended its decision.

She approached the court in July over the matter and made an unsuccessful attempt to resume sitting.

While the matter is still in court, the Kogi Senator served out her six-month suspension in September and declared her intention to return to her duty.
