DR Congo declares public holiday after first World Cup qualification in 52 years

DR Congo national football team have secured a historic return to the FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 victory over Jamaica, ending a 52-year absence from the global tournament.

The decisive goal came in extra time after a tightly contested playoff encounter, sealing qualification and triggering massive celebrations across the country.

It marks DR Congo’s first appearance at the World Cup since 1974, when the nation competed as Zaire.

Government announces public holiday

In response to the achievement, the government took the unusual step of declaring April 1 a paid public holiday nationwide.

The Minister of Employment and Labour described the decision as recognition of “a moment of celebration, unity and national pride.”

Scenes of jubilation quickly spread, with fans gathering in large numbers despite adverse weather conditions.

Celebrations continued into the night, reflecting the scale of the moment for a country returning to football’s biggest stage after more than five decades.

Challenging group awaits return

DR Congo now turn their attention to the tournament itself, where they have been drawn into a competitive group alongside Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan.

The challenge is significant, particularly given the country’s difficult history at the World Cup. In their only previous appearance, they suffered three defeats, including a heavy loss to Yugoslavia.

However, the current qualification represents a reset for the national team and an opportunity to redefine their standing on the global stage.
