Don’t carry bags for strangers during international travel — Man warns

Nigerian man, Ambassador Chima Ihezie has shared a personal experience from 2012 to caution travelers against accepting luggage from strangers during international trips.
According to him, the incident happened while he was traveling to Cologne, Germany. At the airport, a young Nigerian man with several bags approached him and asked if he could help carry one of the pieces of luggage.
Ihezie said the man appeared very friendly during the flight and repeatedly promised to help him secure documents to remain in Germany if he chose to stay. However, Ihezie explained that he was only visiting for a short three-week business trip.
When they arrived at Frankfurt International Airport, the man again pleaded with him to help carry one of the bags.
Ihezie said the repeated requests and excessive friendliness raised his suspicion, prompting him to firmly decline the request.
Moments later, airport security officers arrested the man, making him realize how close he had come to becoming involved in a serious legal problem.
The experience, he said, serves as an important reminder for travelers to avoid accepting or transporting items that do not belong to them during international travel.

“Never Accept to Carry Items for Someone During International Travel
By Amb. Chima Ihezie
In 2012, while traveling to Cologne, Germany, I narrowly escaped being deceived by a young Nigerian man.
He had several pieces of luggage and approached me, asking if I could help him carry just one of his bags. During the flight, we sat close to each other. He was extremely friendly and kept promising that he would help me settle in Germany if I needed assistance with documents.
I explained that I was only visiting for a three-week business trip. However, he kept insisting that I should stay longer and that he could help me obtain German papers.
When we arrived at Frankfurt International Airport, he again begged me to carry one of his bags. At that moment, something didn’t feel right. He had been overly friendly and had made too many promises. My suspicion immediately grew.
I firmly refused.
Within a few minutes at the airport, security officers arrested him.
That was when I realized how close I had come to getting into serious trouble. If I had agreed to carry that bag, I might have been the one going to jail.”
