“Didn’t you enjoy it?”: Lawyer told me I can’t sue a lady for rape in Nigeria — Man cries for justice

A Nigerian man has sparked debate online after claiming he was unable to pursue legal action against a female friend he accused of sexually assaulting him.

The man shared his story in a viral video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying he felt helpless after being told he could not sue because of existing legal limitations.

Allegations Shared in Viral Video

In the emotional video, he explained that the woman involved was someone he had known for a long time. According to him, they had not seen each other in a while, although he often visited her area to see another friend.

He said he usually did not make time to see her during those visits. However, on the day of the alleged incident, she reportedly persuaded him to stop by her house before heading home.

The man said he agreed and visited her after spending time with his other friend. On arrival, he claimed she welcomed him and offered him a drink.

Shortly after taking the drink, he said he began to feel strange and could no longer move his hands or legs properly.

He stated in the video: “She offered me a drink and I drank it only for me to not be able to move my hand, move my legs and I just noticed that I’m trying to take out my belt, you know lose my Jean and I kept on saying, what is going on.”

He added that he questioned what was happening but felt powerless to stop it. He alleged that sexual activity occurred and that he later fell asleep.

The following morning, he claimed the woman did not address the incident or acknowledge that anything unusual had happened.

Hospital Visit and Legal Frustration

The man said he left her home feeling deeply distressed. He explained that he immediately went to a hospital to undergo medical tests to ensure he had not contracted any infection.

Expressing his frustration, he said he later approached a lawyer to explore legal options.

According to him, he was informed that under Nigerian law, it is difficult for a man to sue a woman for rape because of how the offence is defined in some legal provisions.

He said: “I tried to sue a friend, a female friend for sexual assault only got my lawyer to tell that in Nigeria, a man can not sue a woman when it involves rape.”

He further stated, “When a woman rapes a man, the man can’t sue the woman, and I’m like really?”

The claims have since generated widespread reactions online, with many users debating the legal framework surrounding sexual offences in Nigeria.
