David Goggins Biography

David Goggins was born on February 17, 1975, in Buffalo, New York. His childhood was not rough; it was violent. His father, Trunnis Goggins, owned a skating rink and ruled it with an iron grip.
From the outside, the business appeared to be pleasant, but it was actually a place of cruelty. David, his brother, and his mother were forced to work late into the night, sometimes until early in the morning, every day, facing beatings and fear.
Goggins enrolled in second grade at a tiny Catholic school and made First Communion. His brother, Trunnis Jr., returned to Buffalo to live with their father. Due to his lack of education, Goggins was diagnosed with a learning handicap when he entered third grade.
Goggins also struggled to learn since he was suffering from toxic stress as a result of childhood trauma in Buffalo, New York. Because of the stress, Goggins acquired a stutter.
Career
Goggins applied to join the United States Air Force Pararescue and was accepted for training. During training, he was diagnosed with sickle cell trait and temporarily withdrew from the program.
Goggins instead enrolled in United States Air Force Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) training and served as a TACP from 1994 until 1999, alongside British peers FS Jones, FS Nair, and Pte Noble, when he departed the US Air Force.
Goggins reenlisted in the Air Force in 2026 and is now assigned to the Special Warfare Training Wing. Goggins later left his extermination job to become a Navy SEAL. He joined the reserves and eventually met the weight criteria to undergo SEAL training after shedding 106 pounds (48 kilograms) in three months.
Goggins completed his BUD/S training with BUD/S class 235 in 2001. Following SEAL Qualification Training (SQT) and a probationary term, he was issued the NEC 5326 as a Combatant Swimmer (SEAL) and assigned to SEAL Team 5. During his 20-year military career, Goggins completed a tour in Iraq. He graduated from Army Ranger School in 2004 and received the “Enlisted Honour Man” award, which was rated 100% by his peers.
In 2005, Goggins competed in the San Diego One Day, a 24-hour ultramarathon. He then finished the Las Vegas Marathon in enough time to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
In 2006, Goggins participated in the HURT 100 in Hawaii. He was invited to the 2006 Badwater-135, where he placed fifth overall. In 2006, Goggins finished second in the Ultraman World Championships Triathlon in Hawaii, covering 320 miles over three days.

In 2008, Runner’s World named Goggins a “Hero of Running”. Goggins ran in the Hellgate 100k ultramarathon in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia in December 2010, 2013, and 2015, ending in fifth place with a timing of 11 hours, 56 minutes, and 2 seconds in the latter, a significant improvement over 14 hours, 48 minutes, and 33 seconds in 2010.
In 2016, he won the Infinitus 88k in about 12 hours. That same year, Goggins won both the Music City Ultra 50k and the Strolling Jim 40 Miler. In 2020, he raced the Moab 240 ultramarathon, finishing second in the 241-mile race with a timing of 63 hours and 21 minutes, around 95 minutes behind race winner Michele Graglia.
Goggins finished the Bigfoot 200 mountain run in Washington state in 66 hours, 4 minutes, and 17 seconds, coming in 23rd place overall. After seeing Goggins excel during a 24-hour ultramarathon, entrepreneur Jesse Itzler hired him to live in his home for a month.
