Career
At Brunel, Idris met actress Cathy Tyson, who suggested he meet Ade Solanke and audition for a role in her play Pandora’s Box. He accepted the job, signed with an agency, and began appearing in further productions. After appearing at London’s Royal National Theatre, Idris opted to explore television and film opportunities.
He appeared in various British programs, including Miranda (2013), Doctors (2015), and Casualty (2015). Idris’ breakthrough role is Franklin Saint, a driven 19-year-old heroin dealer in Los Angeles, in the FX crime thriller Snowfall, which premiered in July 2017.
The first season of Snowfall, set in 1983 when the United States is on the edge of a crack cocaine pandemic, weaves together the experiences of numerous characters whose lives intersect due to narcotics. Idris auditioned by video in London before flying to Los Angeles, where he spent the day with John Singleton, who wanted to guarantee Idris could learn the accent.
He worked with rapper WC to practise his American accent and learn South Central Los Angeles mannerisms. The second season of Snowfall, set in 1984, debuted in July 2018. Idris made his cinematic debut in 2016 in the British thriller City of Tiny Lights, starring Riz Ahmed.

Idris plays the character based on Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who, like many Nigerians in the late twentieth century, was “farmed out” to a white family in the UK in the hopes of a better life, while Kate Beckinsale plays his strict foster mother.
Idris’ performance earned him the Best Actor in a British Film Award at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2019. He also appears in “Smithereens”, the second episode of the fifth season of the anthology show Black Mirror.
