Cynthia Erivo (born January 8, 1987) is a British actress and singer. She is well-known for her work on stage and cinema, and is one of the few people to have been nominated for an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar Award, and a Tony Award (EGOT), winning all but the Oscar.
She moved into film in 2018 with the crime thrillers Widows and Bad Times at the El Royale. Erivo received Academy Award nods for Best Actress for her roles as Harriet Tubman in Harriet (2019) and Elphaba in Wicked (2024), as well as a mention for Best Original Song for the former’s song “Stand Up”.
She became the first black actress to be nominated twice for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes after repeating her role as Elphaba in Wicked: For Good (2025). Erivo’s performance of “Defying Gravity” alongside Ariana Grande from the Wicked album earned her a second Grammy.

Cynthia Chinasaokwu Onyedinmanasu Owezuke Amarachukwu Echimino Erivo, an Igbo Nigerian immigrant, was born on January 8, 1987, in Stockwell, London. Erivo went to La Retraite Roman Catholic Girls’ School in Clapham Park.
As a child, she appeared in Bertolt Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle, and subsequently on television in Trust Me, I’m a Teenager. She began studying music psychology at the University of East London in 2004.
However, one year into her degree, she applied to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and was accepted. In 2010, she graduated from RADA with a bachelor’s degree in acting.
Career
After graduating in 2010, Erivo instantly found work at the Brighton Festival, playing Ellie, an adolescent virgin about to have sex with an older guy in Simon Stephens’ Marine Parade. Next, Erivo played Leila, a graduate student and sex counsellor, in I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in London.
She then made her West End debut at the Gielgud Theatre as Madeleine in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (2011), a theatrical adaptation of Jacques Demy’s 1964 film.
Although Erivo only sang one line in the musical, it piqued the interest of casting director Will Burton, who referred her to the casting director of the touring stage version of the comedy Sister Act (2011-12).
She landed the role of Deloris Van Cartier, a nightclub singer dressed as a nun, which Whoopi Goldberg popularised in the 1992 film of the same name.
In 2013, Erivo was cast as Celie, the main character in The Colour Purple, in a West End production at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory. Erivo’s performance as an African American woman living in the Jim Crow South received such critical acclaim that producers in the United States wanted her to reprise the role on Broadway.

Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900).
It depicts the narrative of Elphaba Thropp (Erivo), a green-skinned magic student destined to become the Wicked Witch of the West. Erivo’s talents were presented to new audiences through the role, which elevated her to the status of international renown.
