Cunha, Sesko seal late win for Man United vs Aston Villa

Manchester United boosted their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League after late goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko secured a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa.

The result keeps United in third place in the Premier League table and extended interim manager Michael Carrick’s impressive run at Old Trafford, where he has now recorded six consecutive home wins.

Fernandes sparks second-half breakthrough

The first half produced few clear chances, with both sides struggling to find rhythm.

The contest came alive after the break when United captain Bruno Fernandes began to dictate proceedings.

Fernandes delivered a dangerous near-post corner after Emiliano Martinez had earlier denied Bryan Mbeumo.

Midfielder Casemiro met the cross with a flicked header that looped past Martinez and into the net off the far post.

Villa responded 11 minutes later when Ross Barkley, making his first Premier League start in 14 months, struck a sharp equaliser to bring the visitors back into the contest.

United finish strongly

United regained control in the closing stages as Fernandes produced another moment of quality.

His precise through pass sent Cunha racing behind the Villa defence, and the Brazilian calmly slotted a low shot into the far corner.

Substitute Sesko then sealed the victory late on. The forward, who has been in strong scoring form, turned inside the box and saw his effort deflect past Martinez, taking his tally to eight goals in his last 10 matches.

The win strengthens United’s position in the race for Champions League football, while Villa’s inconsistent form continues.

The Midlands side have now won just three of their last 12 league matches, leaving their own hopes of qualifying for Europe’s top competition under pressure.
