Cristiano Ronaldo spared criticism after penalty miss in Portugal vs Ireland
Cristiano Ronaldo has been spared criticism in Portugal after missing a penalty during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland, which Portugal eventually won 1-0.
The Al-Nassr forward saw his 75th-minute spot-kick saved by Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, but Ruben Neves scored a stoppage-time winner to secure victory for Roberto Martinez’s side in Lisbon.
Ronaldo defended despite miss
The miss denied Ronaldo a chance to become the outright all-time leading scorer in World Cup qualifying, as he remains tied on 39 goals with Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz.
Despite the miss, the 40-year-old forward completed the full 90 minutes and continues to lead the national team as captain.

Following the game, Portugal midfielder Renato Veiga defended Ronaldo, saying the veteran striker has nothing to apologise for.
“Cristiano doesn’t have to be apologise for anything. For everything he’s done for Portugal and for what he still does, he deserves only respect,” Veiga told reporters.
Portugal maintain perfect start
The victory kept Portugal at the top of Group A with three consecutive wins as they edge closer to qualification for the 2026 World Cup to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Portugal will face Hungary next at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon on Tuesday, with Ronaldo expected to start as Martinez’s men aim to extend their perfect start to the campaign.
