Courteney Cox (born June 15, 1974) is an American actress and producer who rose to international recognition by portraying Monica Geller on the NBC sitcom Friends (1994-2004) and Gale Weathers in the horror film franchise Scream (1996-present).

Her accomplishments include a Screen Actors Guild Award, nominations for two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Courteney Bass Cox was born on June 15, 1964, in Birmingham, Alabama, and reared there. She is the daughter of businessmen Richard Lewis Cox (1931-2001) and Courteney Copeland (1934-2020). Cox has two older sisters, Virginia and Dorothy, and one older brother, Richard Jr.

Her parents split in 1974, and her mother later married businessman Hunter Copeland (uncle of music promoter and business manager Ian Copeland and Police musician Stewart Copeland).

After graduating from Mountain Brook High School, Cox enrolled in Mount Vernon College in Washington, D.C. (later renamed George Washington University), but did not complete her architecture course, instead pursuing a career in modelling and acting.

Cox’s father is of British (English, Scottish, and Welsh) lineage, and her mother is of Norman and Irish ancestry.

While investigating her family tree for the Who Do You Think You Are? series, Cox learned she is a direct descendant of William the Conqueror and Edward I of England.

Career

Courteney Cox began her career in the 1980s, working briefly for video game producer Bethesda Softworks. She was then chosen from a casting call to appear in Bruce Springsteen’s 1984 music video, Dancing in the Dark.

Her early television credits included major parts in the short-lived NBC series Misfits of Science (1985) and guest performances on The Love Boat (1986) and Murder, She Wrote (1986).

In 1993, she appeared in the short-lived CBS sitcom The Trouble with Larry. The following year, she co-starred with Jim Carrey in the comedy picture Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and appeared as a guest on Seinfeld.

Cox is most recognised for playing Gale Weathers in the Scream horror film franchise. She recently reprised this character in the sixth Scream film, which debuted in 2023 to strong box office business and excellent reviews.

Cox was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, and he is due to executive-produce and appear in Spectrum Originals’ version of the documentary series Last Chance U.

Cox dated actor Michael Keaton from 1989 to 1995. Cox married David Arquette, her Scream co-star, on June 12, 1999, at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. The couple’s daughter was born in June 2004. Jennifer Aniston is her godmother.

Cox claimed that she experienced postpartum depression six months after giving birth to her child. On October 11, 2010, Cox and Arquette announced their separation, while they continue to be close friends and have a business partnership through Coquette Productions. Arquette filed for divorce in June 2012, nearly two years after her separation from Cox.

The divorce was finalised in May 2013. Cox started dating Snow Patrol bandmate Johnny McDaid in late 2013. The pair confirmed their engagement in June 2014. They called off their engagement shortly after, but they have remained together since.
