Confirmed: Tottenham sign Gallagher in £35m midfield deal

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £35 million, strengthening their midfield options midway through the season.

The 25-year-old joins Spurs on a long-term contract, beating competition from Aston Villa to secure his return to the Premier League after just one season in Spain.

Spurs beat rivals to key signing

Gallagher joined Atletico Madrid from Chelsea in August 2024 for around £33 million as part of a deal that saw João Félix move to Stamford Bridge.

After a year in La Liga, where he made 77 appearances across all competitions and scored seven goals, the midfielder has opted for a return to England.

“I’m so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club,” Gallagher said. “I know how great the fans are and I want to create special moments here.”

Frank highlights leadership and intensity

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank described Gallagher as a strategic addition to his squad, particularly with Rodrigo Bentancur sidelined for at least three months due to a hamstring injury.

“Conor is a top midfielder,” Frank said. “He brings leadership, maturity and personality, alongside running power, pressing ability and an eye for goal. He strengthens us in a key area of the pitch.”

England ambitions and season context

Gallagher has 22 England caps but has featured sparingly under current national team boss Thomas Tuchel.

A strong run of form at Spurs could improve his chances of making England’s World Cup squad later this year.

Tottenham currently sit 14th in the Premier League with 27 points from 21 games, having won just one of their last six league matches.

They host West Ham on Saturday as they look to stabilise their domestic campaign, while also remaining in contention for Champions League progression.

Gallagher, a Chelsea academy product, previously enjoyed loan spells at Charlton, Swansea, West Brom and Crystal Palace, and brings extensive Premier League experience back to north London.
