Civil rights group petitions for visa ban on Monday Okpabelo, family members

A civil rights group, the Leadership and  Accountability Initiative has petitioned the US Embassy for a visa ban on Edo state governor, Monday Okpabelo and his family members.

The petition dated, July 21, 2025, stems from Okpebholo’s warning to Peter Obi, a prominent Nigerian politician and former presidential candidate.

Recall that on July 18, 2025, Monday Okpabelo issued a warning to Peter Obi, insisting that he must notify him before visiting the state, and questioned him about his ₦150 million donation.

The group claims Okpebholo’s  statements constitute state-sanctioned intimidation, abuse of office, and a threat to democratic stability.

“The direct threat to the life, freedom of movement and politicial participation of a Nigerian citizen. Moreso, a leading opposition figure amounts to state-san tioned intimidation, abuse of office and a dangerous assault on the democratic space”,The petition stated.

The petition urged for travel restrictions and diplomatic sanctions on Okpebholo and his family as a deterrent against political repression.
