Drama as church expels new bride for refusing intimacy with husband in Abuja

A faith-based organisation in Abuja has expelled a newly married woman following a prolonged marital conflict that emerged shortly after her wedding, sparking public debate over consent, religion, and mental health.

Church expels new bride

The church, Holiness Revival Movement Worldwide, announced the decision during a public service after months of counselling efforts reportedly failed to resolve the dispute between the couple.

Marriage crisis after wedding ceremony

The couple, identified as Isaac and Oyiza, formalised their union in September 2025 after completing traditional and court marriage rites.

However, tensions reportedly arose almost immediately, with the wife repeatedly stating that she did not feel emotionally connected to her husband and was uncomfortable with physical intimacy.

According to the husband, he raised concerns with family members and church leaders when the situation did not improve, hoping mediation would help stabilise the marriage.

Multiple counselling sessions were said to have been held across different locations, but no breakthrough was achieved.

Church’s decision sparks controversy

In a video later circulated online, the church’s international director, Paul Rika, announced the woman’s expulsion, citing spiritual concerns and alleging misconduct.

The pronouncement, which included strong language, has since drawn criticism from members of the public and rights advocates.
