Chukwuemeka switches International allegiance from England to Austria

Carney Chukwuemeka has officially committed his international future to Austria national football team after ending his long association with England national football team.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder, who previously represented England at youth level, will now be eligible to play under Austria coach Ralf Rangnick following FIFA’s approval of the nationality switch.
FIFA clears nationality change
Chukwuemeka, born in Austria but raised in England, had featured for the Three Lions from the Under-17 to Under-20 levels.
His last involvement with the England setup came through an Under-21 call-up in 2023, although injury prevented him from making an appearance.

With FIFA now ratifying the change, the 22-year-old midfielder will officially represent Austria at senior level.
Rangnick gains midfield reinforcement
The decision is expected to strengthen Rangnick’s squad ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The former Manchester United interim manager has been looking to refresh Austria’s midfield options, and Chukwuemeka could feature alongside experienced players such as David Alaba and Marcel Sabitzer.
He may make his debut later this month when Austria face Ghana national team on March 27 before another friendly against South Korea on March 31.
Club revival at Dortmund
Chukwuemeka’s international decision follows improved stability at club level.
After struggling for regular playing time at Chelsea, the midfielder completed a £24 million permanent transfer to Borussia Dortmund in August 2025 following a successful loan spell.
Since arriving at Signal Iduna Park, he has registered five goals in 30 appearances across all competitions.
Dortmund currently sit second in the Bundesliga with 55 points from 25 matches, trailing leaders Bayern Munich, and are preparing to face Augsburg in their next league outing.
