Chike opens up on awkward church moment that drove him away

Notable singer Chike has offered a candid look into the experiences that shaped his relationship with faith and church attendance.
Speaking about events from years ago, he revealed that a surprising encounter at a church he once visited made him deeply uncomfortable and led him to stop attending.

Experience with religious ex
According to Chike, “the chick that was leading the praise and worship, we had history. And I couldn’t… I’m like… I was having flashbacks. And she was kabashing, and I’m like… who’s that.”
He explained that the situation felt awkward and distracting, prompting him to leave the church after just a week. He clarified that his decision had nothing to do with rejecting his belief in God.
“Not because I don’t believe in God, because I do,” he said, recounting a moment early in his career when he prayed earnestly for help while living in Primewater Gardens with his then-girlfriend.
“I just said a prayer. I just said, God, I don’t have anybody. I don’t have anything. Just help me.”
Singer’s experience with ‘potent edible’
Chike also reflected on a confusing period shortly after releasing his debut album, recalling how he unknowingly consumed a potent edible. “Three, four days into the release of my album, I didn’t even know where I was. You know, but that was it.”
Despite his continued belief in God, Chike noted that the formal structure of church doesn’t fit into his life. “So I don’t… Church is not for me. There are things that I like, that I would not be able to do,” he said, adding that what truly matters, whether in public life, personal life, or leadership, is treating others well. “You just need to do right. By the people. By the people. By the people. Not necessarily leave a certain… Look, since I’m Christian, not certainly live a Christian life …”
