Chelsea seek miracle in Champions League second leg vs PSG

Chelsea face a daunting task as they attempt to produce a miraculous comeback in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain after suffering a heavy 5-2 first-leg defeat in Paris.

The London club trail by three goals following a difficult night at the Parc des Princes, leaving them needing a remarkable comeback to keep their European campaign alive.

Historically, overturning a three-goal deficit at this stage of the Champions League has proven extremely rare.

Chelsea face tough challenge

This is only the second time Chelsea have lost the first leg of a European knockout tie by three or more goals.

The previous instance came in the 2020 Round of 16 against Bayern Munich. On that occasion, the Blues were beaten 3-0 at Stamford Bridge before losing the return leg 4-1 in Germany.

Chelsea will hope to avoid a similar fate this time, although the margin they must overcome makes progression unlikely.

The club will draw some inspiration from their 3-0 victory over PSG in the Club World Cup final last summer, but an even larger winning margin is now required to overturn the deficit.

PSG history favours progression

For PSG, history suggests they are well placed to reach the quarter-finals. The French champions have held a three-goal or greater advantage after the first leg of a European tie on 14 previous occasions.

In 12 of those ties, PSG successfully progressed to the next round. The only notable collapse came in the famous 2017 Champions League Round of 16 clash with Barcelona.

After winning the first leg 4-0 in Paris, PSG were stunned 6-1 at Camp Nou in a dramatic comeback widely known as the “Remontada”.

Chelsea will now need a similarly historic turnaround if they are to keep their Champions League hopes alive and deny PSG another place in the latter stages of Europe’s premier club competition.
