Chelsea revisit interest in Maignan after Sanchez red card raises doubts

Chelsea are reportedly mulling over reviving their pursuit of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan after Robert Sanchez’s red card in the defeat to Manchester United raised fresh concerns over their options between the sticks.

Recall Sanchez was sent off just five minutes into the clash at Old Trafford for a rash challenge on Bryan Mbeumo, forcing Enzo Maresca into early changes as Filip Jorgensen came on in goal.

United skipper Bruno Fernandes soon punished the Blues by opening the scoring.

Maignan back on Chelsea’s radar

According to Express UK, while Sanchez will only serve a one-match ban in the Carabao Cup against Lincoln City, the incident has reportedly reopened Chelsea’s interest in Maignan.

The Blues had shown intent during the summer but baulked at Milan’s £25m valuation.

Contract uncertainty at Milan

The 30-year-old France international is yet to agree a new deal at San Siro, with his current contract expiring next year.

He will be free to discuss terms with clubs outside Italy from January, making him an attractive target.

Maresca keen on tactical fit

Maresca is said to be a strong admirer of Maignan, viewing him as an ideal fit for his system.

Although Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri convinced him to stay in the summer and even handed him the captain’s armband, Chelsea could return with a renewed push in January.
