Chelsea records biggest loss in Premier League history

Chelsea FC have reported a pre-tax loss of £262m for the 2024/25 season, the largest in Premier League history.

The figure surpasses the previous record of £179.5m set by Manchester City in 2011, despite Chelsea generating £490.9m in revenue, the second-highest in the club’s history.

The financial results come in a season where Chelsea won the UEFA Conference League, lifted the Club World Cup, and secured a top-four finish in the league.

Spending model under scrutiny

Since the 2022 takeover by BlueCo, Chelsea have spent over £1bn on player recruitment, focusing heavily on younger talent tied to long-term contracts. The club attributes part of the losses to exceptional costs, including fines and accounting write-offs.

These include a Premier League sanction linked to historical agent payments during Roman Abramovich’s ownership, as well as player-related write-downs involving high-profile names.

UEFA had earlier fined Chelsea £26.7m for breaching squad-cost ratio rules and continues to monitor the club’s financial compliance over a multi-year period.

Despite the headline loss, Chelsea insist they remain within Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which permit losses of up to £105m over three years under specific accounting adjustments.
