Chelsea pay tribute after Thiago Silva’s mother dies at 70

Chelsea have sent a message of support to former defender Thiago Silva following the death of his mother, Angela Maria da Silva, at the age of 70.
Silva announced the tragic news on social media, sharing a photo with his mother and expressing his grief. The Brazilian centre-back, now playing for Porto, said he was struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.
“My little mom, I can’t believe it. Unbelievable. How is that possible? I’m going to miss you so much,” Silva wrote in a message posted on Instagram.
Clubs send condolences
Chelsea were among the first clubs to send their sympathies to the veteran defender, who spent four seasons at Stamford Bridge.

“Everyone at Chelsea is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Angela Maria da Silva, beloved mother of Thiago Silva,” the club said in a statement.
“Our thoughts are with Thiago, and all of Angela’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
Silva’s current club also released a statement confirming their support during the difficult period.
“FC Porto received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Thiago Silva’s mother,” Porto said.
“In a moment of great consternation, the Club extends its deepest condolences to the athlete and his entire family. FC Porto will always stand by Thiago Silva and sends him a strong embrace in this time of grief.”
Silva to miss upcoming match
The 41-year-old defender is expected to travel to Rio de Janeiro to attend his mother’s funeral. As a result, he will miss Porto’s upcoming league fixture against Moreirense.
Silva enjoyed a successful spell at Chelsea, making 155 appearances for the London club and helping them win the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
After leaving Chelsea, Silva briefly returned to Brazil with Fluminense, before moving back to Europe to join Porto as he continues his playing career.
The loss comes during a difficult period for the defender’s family, with his wife Belle Silva also mourning the recent death of her father last week.
