Chelsea, Liverpool enter court clash over Nigeria-eligible talent Ngumoha

A legal battle has erupted between Chelsea and Liverpool over Nigeria-eligible forward Rio Ngumoha.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea have approached a tribunal, seeking compensation for the 16-year-old, who left Cobham in 2024 after refusing to sign a scholarship contract.

Under academy rules, once such an offer is made, a fee is due if the player departs for another club.

Ngumoha’s switch to Liverpool has already made headlines after he scored the decisive goal against Newcastle United on Monday night, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at 16 years and 361 days.

The London-born forward joined Chelsea’s system at just six years old, rising through the ranks as part of their inaugural U8s group.

Despite being offered a scholarship, he and his family declined, clearing the way for his Anfield move.

Since making his senior debut in an FA Cup tie against Accrington Stanley in January 2025, Ngumoha has featured in six official matchday squads for Liverpool.

The tribunal ruling will determine whether Liverpool must compensate Chelsea for the teenager’s departure.
