Chelsea boss Maresca confirms Liam Delap is ‘very close’ to return

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has confirmed that striker Liam Delap is “very close” to making his return to team training after being sidelined since August with a hamstring injury sustained against Fulham.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Ajax, Maresca revealed that while Delap is not yet back with the squad, his recovery is progressing well.

“Liam is very close,” Maresca said. “He is not working with us yet, he is still out, but hopefully he can start in the next days to take part in the session with us.”

The 21-year-old’s return will provide a timely boost to Maresca’s attacking options as the Blues continue to fight their way through a congested fixture schedule.

Fernandez back in team training

Maresca also offered a positive update on Enzo Fernandez, confirming that the midfielder has resumed training after missing the Nottingham Forest match due to a minor knee issue.

“Enzo took part in the session yesterday. We have one more session this afternoon, we see if we decide with him tomorrow,” the Italian said. “It’s nothing to worry about, just a precaution to protect him.”
