Chelle defends CHAN squad after ‘bias’ allegations

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has dismissed claims of bias in his 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) squad selection.
The gaffer insists that every call-up was based on tactical fit, not club affiliation or personal relationships.
The Malian-born tactician, who leads Nigeria into CHAN with a 23-man squad drawn solely from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), has faced scrutiny over the perceived overrepresentation of players from Remo Stars.
The club’s coach also serves as Chelle’s assistant, fuelling allegations of favouritism.
“This is not about my assistant being the coach of Remo,” Chelle said during a press briefing. “No, no, no. I need players who deserve to be here through their game and who fit my philosophy.”
Chelle made clear that his selections were guided by a playing style focused on ball possession and high pressing.
“I want to keep the ball, and when we don’t have it, I want us to press high. So I need players who can play in that system,” he explained.
He referenced other national teams, such as Morocco and South Africa, that rely heavily on players from dominant local clubs to justify his squad composition.
“Remo Stars won the league, but for me, it’s about who fits the game plan,” he added.
The coach acknowledged that some players may feel overlooked. “Maybe one or two players deserve to be in this team, but this is the reality.”
Nigeria will face Senegal, Sudan, and Congo in Group D, starting this weekend.
With key players like Papa Daniel Mustapha unavailable due to overseas transfers, Chelle said the team is prepared. “We’ve worked a lot. This is a new team.”
