CAF names Nigeria’s Adamu acting Secretary-General

The Confederation of African Football has appointed Nigeria’s Samson Adamu as its Acting Secretary-General, marking a historic milestone for the country.

Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the role in an acting capacity since CAF was established over 70 years ago.

Leadership change at CAF

Adamu replaces Veron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down from the position to contest the presidency of the FECOFA (DR Congo).

The announcement was confirmed in a statement by the Nigeria Football Federation’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire.

“Prior to his appointment, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a pivotal role in the successful organisation of major continental competitions,” the statement read.

Experience and appointment process

Adamu’s elevation follows years of administrative experience within CAF, particularly in overseeing flagship tournaments across Africa.

His appointment was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and subsequently ratified by the congress during its meeting held on March 29, 2026, in Cairo.

The move is seen as a strategic step in maintaining operational continuity within CAF’s leadership structure, while also recognising Adamu’s contribution to the organisation of key competitions.

His tenure, though currently in an acting capacity, places him at the centre of CAF’s administrative and strategic operations during a period of ongoing reforms within African football.
