CAF expands AFCON to 28 teams

The Confederation of African Football has confirmed plans to increase the number of teams participating in the Africa Cup of Nations from 24 to 28.

The announcement was made by CAF president Patrice Motsepe following an executive committee meeting held in Cairo, Egypt.

Format expansion confirmed

Motsepe stated that the expansion is part of broader reforms aimed at improving competitiveness and inclusivity across African football.

The current 24-team format has been in place since 2019, replacing the previous 16-team structure. The move to 28 teams represents another significant shift, although CAF has not yet confirmed when the new format will take effect.

Speaking at the briefing, Motsepe emphasised the need for structural consistency in African football scheduling.

“We have to stop this thing of African fixtures not being predictable, consistent, and reliable,” he said.

Calendar reforms and new competitions

CAF also outlined adjustments to its competition calendar. The 2027 AFCON will proceed as planned across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

In addition, another AFCON tournament is scheduled for 2028, after which the competition will transition to a four-year cycle.

CAF further revealed plans to introduce a Nations League-style competition starting in 2029. The proposed format will feature annual fixtures, culminating in a 16-team final tournament held every two years.

Motsepe noted that these changes are designed to strengthen football development across the continent, particularly in emerging regions.

“We must develop football in East Africa, which is an area of much potential,” he added.
