“But I paid for two seats!” — Plus-sized passenger sparks controversy over extra plane seat
A domestic flight became tense after a disagreement between two passengers over an extra seat purchased by a plus-size traveler.
The incident highlights ongoing debates about personal space and passenger etiquette on flights.
Traveler insists on reserved seat
According to online accounts, the traveler had intentionally purchased two seats to ensure comfort and avoid inconveniencing others.
During boarding, a mother traveling with a toddler asked if her child could occupy the empty seat.
“I paid for both seats so I could sit comfortably. I didn’t want to make anyone else uncomfortable,” the traveler told the flight attendant, explaining her reason for reserving the extra seat.
The mother reportedly complained, insisting that the toddler should occupy the seat. The traveler then presented her boarding passes, proving she had legitimately reserved both seats.
The airline sided with the traveler, allowing her to keep the seat while the toddler remained on the parent’s lap, a common arrangement for young children.
Passengers react and debate etiquette
Despite the resolution, the traveler said she felt uneasy for the rest of the journey. “I noticed disapproving looks and passive-aggressive comments from other passengers. It made the rest of the flight uncomfortable,” she said.
The incident has since sparked discussions online about the rights of passengers who purchase multiple seats and the challenges of balancing courtesy with personal comfort.
