Bundesliga: Victor Boniface sets target for Werder Bremen season
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has outlined his personal goal for the 2025/2026 season with Werder Bremen, insisting his focus is on consistency and fitness rather than goal statistics.
The 24-year-old forward joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen on transfer deadline day but has yet to find the net in his new surroundings.
Despite his scoring drought, Boniface has provided two assists in eight appearances and played a role in Bremen’s recent win over VfL Wolfsburg.
“It’s about the team, not just goals”
Speaking to SABC Sports, Boniface emphasized that collective success outweighs personal milestones:
“Football is like life. Sometimes you have good moments, sometimes bad ones, but the most important thing is to find the right way.
“It’s not about me scoring; it’s about the results of the team. I can be scoring and we are losing, I don’t want that. I want a situation where we can win games, and when we start winning, the goals will come.”
Focused on staying fit and consistent
After enduring two cruciate ligament injuries earlier in his career, Boniface revealed his main ambition this season is to remain injury-free and help the team achieve its goals.
“For me, personally, my goal is to play the whole season without injury. I just want to help the team in any way I can, score goals, assist and stay fit. The rest will follow.”
Mental strength and perspective
The former Union Saint-Gilloise striker, who has experienced personal and professional setbacks, said his strong mentality keeps him grounded amid media criticism.
“I grew up with my grandparents in Africa, so I learned toughness early. I’ve played in places I never imagined, Norway, Cyprus, and I’ve learned a lot. The media will always talk, but I don’t let that bother me. My head is strong; I just focus on getting better.”
Not included in Super Eagles squad
Despite his potential, Boniface was not called up by head coach Eric Chelle for Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash against Gabon.
The 2024 Bundesliga Rookie of the Year remains focused on rediscovering his best form and helping Werder Bremen climb the Bundesliga table.
