Brigadier General Braimah Biography: Early Life, Career, Death and Family

Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah was a prominent Nigerian Army leader who fought terrorism for almost two decades. He was the Brigade Commander of the 29th Task Force Brigade in Borno State during Operation HADIN KAI, which commanded frontline troops in Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP.

On Thursday morning, April 9, militants from the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) assassinated Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah and 17 soldiers in a coordinated attack on military formations in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area, Ngamdu, and Pulka town in Borno State’s Gwoza LGA.

Brigadier General Oseni Braimah was born in the mid-70s. While his exact birthdate is unknown, he is known to have served in the Nigerian Army as a respected military officer.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

In September 2000, Brigadier General Braimah was commissioned into the Nigerian Army.

He earned a Master’s degree in National Security Management and War Studies from the National Defence University in Islamabad. Between 2004 and 2006, he attended Benue State University and received a Master of Arts in International Relations and Strategic Studies.

From 2016 to 2017, the late General received a Master of Arts in Defence Studies from King’s College in London. He later earned a Diploma in Strategic Leadership and Management from the Chartered Management Institute.

Career

From 2011 to 2012, he served as an Observer for the United Nations. From January to December 2014, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff at the Headquarters of the Guard Brigad

From December 2014 to October 2015, he served as the Commanding Officer of the 7 Guard Battalion.

From October 2015 until December 2018, he directed staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Jaji, Kaduna State.

He later became the College’s Chief Instructor, serving from December 2018 until December 2019.

From December 2019 to May 2021, the late Brig. Gen. Braima was Chief J3 (DCOS G3) at the headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai in the North East.

He later worked as Defence Adviser, Nigeria High Commission, Islamabad, Pakistan, from May 2021 until August 2024.

He was also Chief of Staff in the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division Headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, from September 2024 to March 2025.

Brigadier General Braimah was the Brigade Commander of the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh until his death on April 9.

Brigadier General Oseni Braimah Cause of Death

Brigadier General Oseni Braimah was killed in the early hours of April 9, 2026, during a coordinated terrorist attack on the 29th Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area, Borno State.

The attack began at 12:30 a.m., when suspected ISWAP members attempted to breach the defensive line using explosives and heavy gunfire. According to Defence Headquarters, Braimah personally directed the counter-offensive with “exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower.”

The forces successfully repelled the attackers, forcing them to retreat. However, the conflict killed the brigade commander, his second-in-command, the brigade imam, and at least 17 other soldiers.

Zanna Lawan Ajimi, Chairman of the Kaga Local Government Area, confirmed the general’s death after visiting the military base. During the same night, terrorists attacked military positions in Ngamdu and Pulka.
