BREAKING: Tinubu bags Saint Lucia’s highest national honour, Knight Commander of the Order

The government of Saint Lucia has conferred its highest national honour on Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in recognition of efforts to deepen ties between Africa and the Caribbean.

President Tinubu was conferred with the prestigious title of “Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL)” by the Governor-General of Saint Lucia on Monday.

The announcement was made public in an official statement posted on the government’s X (formerly Twitter) page.

“The Government of Saint Lucia is pleased to announce that the Governor-General has conferred the title of Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL) upon H. E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement read.

President Tinubu, during his visit to the Caribbean nation, addressed a joint session of the Saint Lucian Senate and House of Assembly, where he pledged to strengthen the relationship between both countries.

He stated that Nigeria is committed to building stronger ties with Saint Lucia, with a focus on promoting economic growth, cultural exchange, and development.

“My visit to Saint Lucia is in line with the goal of building a bridge between Africa and the Caribbean, while deepening economic cooperation and fostering mutual development. Our administration is ready to nurture and expand partnerships in trade, investment, tourism, education, and cultural exchange,” Tinubu said.

The government of Saint Lucia also expressed its intention to formalise diplomatic relations with Nigeria.

As part of the new arrangement, both countries will implement a ‘visa waiver’ policy for holders of diplomatic and official passports from member states of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

In addition, Nigeria will extend scholarship opportunities to OECS citizens and broaden the reach of its Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (TAC) programme to the region.
