BREAKING: Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe officially dumps APGA, joins ADC

Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The lawmaker announced his defection on Wednesday, bringing weeks of speculation over his political future to an end. His decision follows prolonged internal disagreements within APGA.

Abaribe said he could no longer continue in the party due to what he described as irreconcilable differences with its leadership and direction. According to him, repeated efforts to resolve the issues internally failed.

He explained that the ADC offered a clearer platform that aligns with his principles and commitment to democratic accountability. The senator said his move was the outcome of wide consultations with political associates and constituents.

“After wide consultations, I have taken the decision to formally resign from APGA and align with the African Democratic Congress, which provides a clearer vision for good governance and national renewal,” Abaribe said.

The senator stressed the need for a strong and principled opposition capable of offering Nigerians a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general election.

His departure from APGA follows months of strained relations over internal party democracy, candidate selection processes and alleged marginalisation of key stakeholders.

Abaribe had publicly criticised the party’s leadership for taking unilateral decisions and failing to build consensus.

Sources said he was also involved in disputes over APGA’s political strategy in Abia State, particularly on alliances and the party’s posture towards the ruling party, which he reportedly felt undermined its founding ideals.

A former deputy governor of Abia State, Abaribe is one of APGA’s most prominent national figures.

His defection is expected to have political implications in Abia South and beyond as preparations for 2027 gather pace.
