Bovi Ugboma was born in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. He received his initial education at the UNIBEN staff school. In 1991, he joined the Government College in Ughelli, Delta State. For disciplinary problems and his parents’ concerns about his growth as a youth, he was withdrawn from boarding school and relocated to Edokpolor Grammar School in Benin City, where they lived.

That change proved ineffective, and he transferred to his third secondary school, Boys Model Secondary School, Onicha Olona, an all-boarding school. After finishing his secondary education, he enrolled at Delta State University in 1998, where he studied theatre arts.

Career

Bovi made his acting debut in April 2007 with the sitcom Extended Family, which he also wrote and produced. The show was popular, and viewers enjoyed it. Bovi was a rising star in comedy shows and events in Nigeria. He made his stand-up comedy debut in Nigeria’s finest comedy franchise, Night of a Thousand Laughs, which is organised by Opa Williams.

Bovi’s debut stand-up special was staged at the Eko Convention Center. In 2014, he released a sequel, Bovi: Man on Fire, which featured performances by worldwide music icons Ja Rule and Ashanti. Bovi took his one-man show to various locations in the United States, including London, Melbourne, Kyiv, Brisbane, Sydney, Moscow, and Toronto.

He had a three-year pause following the 2014 version of the programme; after the absence, the Man on Fire franchise returned to Lagos, and it was the most successful yet. The fourth iteration in Lagos took place in April 2019, and Bovi stated that it was the final of the Man on Fire franchise.

He claims his next special will have a different title. Bovi started a series called Back To School in 2018 that he posts on his YouTube account. Bovi has collaborated with several Nigerian comedians, including I Go Dye, I Go Save, Basketmouth, Buchi, Odogwu, Okey Bakassi, Julius Agwu, and many others.

In July 2022, Bovi held his latest comedy special, Bovi – Naughty By Nature, in Lagos, which sold out two days in advance. Bovi’s first film, It’s Her Day, premiered on September 9, 2016. The film grossed 55 million naira at the Nigerian box office. In 2016, he starred as the lead in the romance comedy 4-1-Love.

In 2017, he was nominated for the AMVCA awards as best actor in comedy, his third solo nomination since the AMVCA’s existence and fourth for his work. Despite a lack of mainstream exposure, the film enjoyed a successful run in theatres, grossing 55 million naira at the box office.

In 2020, he played a police officer in the adaptation of Nollywood’s classic Nneka the Pretty Serpent. He also created, co-produced, and acted in his second film, My Village People. The film went on to join the list of 17 Nigerian films that grossed 100 million naira at the local box office.
