‘Biggest club in London’ – Morgan Rogers first words as Chelsea player
Chelsea have completed the signing of England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a British record fee of £117 million, ending weeks of speculation over the 24-year-old’s future.
Rogers signed a six-year contract with the Blues, with the option of an additional year, after returning from England’s FIFA World Cup campaign in the United States.
The midfielder expressed his excitement after sealing the move.
“I’m joining the biggest club in London,” Rogers said in his announcement video.
“The way the club wants to go and how it wants to move forward is something I want to be a part of. I think it was just perfect for me. I just can’t wait to get going.”
Chelsea moved quickly after World Cup
Chelsea accelerated negotiations following England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, with the club determined to complete the transfer before rival suitors could act.
According to reports, sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso and co-owner Behdad Eghbali all played key roles in finalising the deal.
Chelsea captain Reece James also reportedly spoke positively to Rogers while the pair were with the England squad, while close friend Cole Palmer was aware of developments throughout the process.
The agreement was completed in less than 48 hours, helped by the strong relationship between Chelsea co-owner Eghbali and Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris.
Arsenal miss out on midfielder
Arsenal had long been viewed as favourites for Rogers but were unwilling to match Chelsea’s valuation after being given the opportunity to do so.
The Gunners are now expected to pursue alternative attacking targets, including Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola and Bournemouth youngster Junior Kroupi.
Chelsea’s interest in Rogers dates back more than two years, with the clubs previously discussing a possible transfer during negotiations surrounding their 2024 player exchanges.
The signing also reflects Chelsea’s shift in recruitment strategy, with the club now prioritising proven performers alongside emerging talent.
Co-owner Behdad Eghbali had previously acknowledged the need to add more established players to strengthen the squad.
“You tweak a model, you improve, you learn from mistakes,” Eghbali said earlier this year.
Rogers now arrives at Stamford Bridge as one of Chelsea’s marquee additions ahead of the new season, with expectations high after becoming the most expensive British player in football history.
