Benfica 0-1 Real Madrid: Vinicius decisive in tense Lisbon UCL clash

Vinícius Júnior proved the difference as Real Madrid sealed a hard-fought away victory over Benfica in a heated European encounter wrapped in controversy.

Pre-match cordiality between Benfica coach José Mourinho and Madrid counterpart Álvaro Arbeloa quickly gave way to a combative contest, particularly after the interval.

Cagey first half

Benfica began aggressively, targeting Madrid’s back line with direct runs. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was called into action early, producing a low save to deny Fredrik Aursnes.

Madrid gradually imposed themselves. Arda Güler and Trent Alexander-Arnold combined to create the clearest opening of the half, but the cross narrowly evaded Kylian Mbappé.

Late pressure saw Mbappé and Güler test goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin, though Benfica held firm until the break.

Vinicius sparks drama

Five minutes into the second half, Vinícius delivered the breakthrough. Cutting in from the left, he curled a powerful strike into the top corner from a tight angle, leaving Trubin with no chance.

The Brazilian’s celebration was followed by a booking and a heated exchange with Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.

Vinícius appeared to alert officials to alleged racist abuse, prompting referee François Letexier to activate the anti-racism protocol.

After a lengthy delay and a red card for a Benfica staff member, play resumed in a tense atmosphere.

Benfica pushed forward in response, but Madrid’s defense led by Antonio Rüdiger and Aurélien Tchouaméni remained strong.

Further controversy followed when Mourinho was sent off after protesting a challenge involving Vinícius. Benfica threatened from the resulting free-kick but failed to find an equaliser.

Madrid closed out the match, taking a slender advantage back to the Santiago Bernabéu.
