Bayern score five against Stuttgart to begin Bundesliga title defence

Bayern Munich began their Bundesliga title defence with a 5-1 win over Stuttgart in their first match of the new 2026/27 season.

Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring with a clever header across goal from Joshua Kimmich’s corner, giving Vincent Kompany’s side an early advantage.

Bayern regain control after Stuttgart leveller

Stuttgart goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow produced several impressive saves to keep his side in the contest before Josha Vagnoman eventually levelled with a powerful finish.

Bayern responded quickly, with Michael Olise restoring their lead after Kimmich’s through ball released him into space.

Vagnoman then endured a nightmare moment as he slipped while attempting to clear Alphonso Davies’ cross, sending the ball into his own net to put Bayern 3-1 ahead.

Olise denied before Bayern add two more

Olise appeared to have scored his second when he converted Harry Kane’s pass, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Bayern continued to dominate and added a fourth through Aleksandar Pavlovic, who tapped into an empty net after unselfish play from substitute Ismael Saibari.

Saibari sets up Diaz for fifth

Saibari, making his Bundesliga debut following his £43m summer move from PSV Eindhoven, then turned provider again in stoppage time.

The substitute found Luis Diaz, who finished to complete the scoring and cap a dominant opening-day victory for the defending champions.

Bayern have now won both of their competitive matches this season, having also beaten Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the German Super Cup last week.
