Bassey insists United goal should have been ruled out in Fulham draw

Calvin Bassey has argued that Manchester United’s opener against Fulham should not have stood, claiming he was fouled in the build-up.

United broke the deadlock just before the hour mark when Leny Yoro rose to meet Bryan Mbeumo’s corner, with the defender’s header deflecting off Rodrigo Muniz for an own goal.

But Fulham players immediately protested, insisting Yoro had shoved Bassey in the back before leaping.

Speaking after the 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage, the Nigerian centre-back said: “It is enough for me to not be able to win the ball and it is an advantage to him.

“It should have been disallowed. When the referee looks back, I think they will be disappointed.

“I cannot say too much, otherwise I will get a fine. It is a foul. When you go up to a jump, any little touch can put you off. What do you want me to do? Jump on the floor?” he questioned rhetorically.

The incident came after Bassey himself conceded a first-half foul that led to a United penalty, only for Bruno Fernandes to blaze the spot-kick over the bar.

Emile Smith Rowe eventually salvaged a point for the Cottagers, turning in Alex Iwobi’s cross with his first touch off the bench.

Ruben Amorim’s United remain winless in the Premier League this season and now turn their focus to Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie away to Grimsby Town.
