Barcelona’s Gavi ruled out for up to five months after knee surgery

Barcelona midfielder Gavi is expected to be sidelined for up to five months after undergoing surgery on his right knee.
The 21-year-old featured in Barça’s opening two fixtures this season before sustaining the injury during training in August, raising fears of a recurrence of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear he suffered in 2023.
Surgery confirmed
The club confirmed that Gavi underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a medial meniscus injury, which was sutured in order to preserve the meniscus.

“Recovery time is estimated at around four to five months,” Barcelona said in a statement.
Previous setback
The Spain international had already endured a long spell on the sidelines after tearing his ACL while on international duty in November 2023, which kept him out for nearly a year.
Career and current campaign
Since breaking into the first team in 2021 as the club’s fourth youngest debutant, Gavi has made 155 appearances, scoring 10 goals and winning five trophies.
Barcelona currently sit second in La Liga, five points behind Real Madrid with a game in hand.
