Barcelona submit €70m offer for Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon – report

Barcelona have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon after submitting a formal offer for the England international.

The Catalan club are looking to strengthen their attacking options this summer and have now shifted focus towards Gordon following interest in Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez and Chelsea forward Joao Pedro.

Reports in Spain claim Barcelona have submitted a €70 million bid for the 25-year-old, although Newcastle are believed to value the player at around €92 million.

Barcelona move quickly amid Bayern interest

Gordon had previously been linked with Bayern Munich, with Newcastle said to have held discussions with the Bundesliga champions over a possible transfer.

However, Barcelona are now attempting to move ahead of rival clubs by accelerating negotiations and reaching an agreement on personal terms with the player.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that rough contract terms have already been agreed between Gordon and Barcelona, with the Spanish champions keen to complete the deal before further competition emerges.

Newcastle are yet to indicate whether they would accept Barcelona’s current offer, which falls significantly below their reported asking price.

Gordon emerged as key Newcastle attacker

Gordon became one of Newcastle’s main attacking figures last season following the departure of Alexander Isak and injuries affecting the squad’s forward options.

Although naturally deployed on the left wing, the England international was also used centrally and finished the campaign with 17 goals and five assists in 46 appearances across all competitions.

Barcelona are understood to view Gordon as a versatile option capable of operating across the frontline.

With Robert Lewandowski expected to leave this summer, the club may see Gordon as part of a long-term attacking rebuild, although he could also compete for a role alongside Raphinha on the left side of attack.

Barcelona continue to work within financial constraints, meaning negotiations with Newcastle could depend on player sales or a revised structure to any potential agreement.
