Balde ruled out of Newcastle UCL tie, Kounde doubtful

Barcelona have been dealt a major setback ahead of their Champions League last-16 clash with Newcastle United after confirming hamstring injuries to both Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde.

The defensive duo sustained the injuries during the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid.

Although Barcelona won 3-0 on the night, they were eliminated 4-3 on aggregate, compounding the blow with the loss of two first-choice defenders.

Medical update confirmed

In an official statement, the club confirmed: “First-team player Jules Kounde has suffered a mid-belly hamstring (biceps femoris) injury in his left thigh. His recovery progress will determine his availability.”

A separate announcement addressed Balde’s condition: “First-team player Alejandro Balde has suffered a distal hamstring (biceps femoris) injury in his left thigh. Examinations indicate that the recovery process will take approximately 4 weeks.”

Balde’s projected timeline effectively rules him out of both legs against Newcastle, while Kounde remains a doubt depending on his rehabilitation progress.

Kounde was forced off after just 11 minutes, while Balde, introduced during the reshuffle, was unable to complete the match.

Flick faces defensive reshuffle

Head coach Hansi Flick must now reorganise his back line at a critical stage of the season. Barcelona sit four points clear at the top of La Liga, but the timing of these injuries places added strain on squad depth.

Meanwhile, club captain Raphinha urged focus despite the setback.

“I am very proud of this team,” he said. “If we continue playing like this, we will have a spectacular end to the season… We are disappointed not to go through to the final, but with more positive conclusions than negative ones.”
