Awoniyi faces English FA sanction over goal celebration

Taiwo Awoniyi could face disciplinary action from the Football Association following his goal celebration in Nottingham Forest’s 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The striker came off the bench to score Forest’s third goal, sealing a comfortable away victory and marking only his second goal of the season after an injury-hit campaign.

Celebration could be sanctioned

Awoniyi celebrated by removing his shirt and revealing an undershirt bearing the message “God is the greatest,” before kneeling in the corner.

He was immediately shown a yellow card for taking off his jersey, but the message displayed underneath could prompt further review by the FA.

Under football regulations, players are prohibited from displaying political, religious, or personal slogans on clothing during matches, with potential sanctions ranging from warnings to fines.

Possible sanction decision

The FA is expected to assess whether Awoniyi’s actions constitute a breach of these rules. While similar cases have led to financial penalties, the context of the message may influence the outcome.

A comparable incident occurred in 2018 when Pep Guardiola was fined for displaying a political symbol, highlighting the governing body’s strict stance on such matters.

Awoniyi’s case, however, is viewed as less contentious, as it involves a personal expression of faith rather than a political statement.

Meanwhile, Forest’s victory lifted them further away from relegation danger, but attention is now on whether the Nigerian forward will face punishment in the aftermath of his celebration.
